As your child grows, their baby teeth should have wide spaces between them. After all, baby teeth are placeholders for your child's adult teeth. Believe it or not, an additional 8-12 adult teeth will be added to your child's original smile of 20 teeth! The growth plate in your child's jaw allows for this expansion, but, unfortunately, it doesn’t always open up widely or quickly enough, causing crowded and misaligned teeth or a poor bite structure.
At Kids Dental Center, we have a variety of orthodontic solutions to both treat and help avoid improper alignment!
Phase I orthodontic treatment is a “preemptive strike,” making room for the 28 permanent teeth to come in properly. The hard and soft tissues of the mouth are still malleable between 6-12 years of age, so it is usually successful enough that your child may not need to have traditional braces. However, if they do, they may be able to wear their orthodontics for less time during their teenage years!
In Phase II treatment (traditional orthodontics and braces), metal brackets are bonded to the enamel and attached by wires to move your child's teeth into a healthier, more aligned position. Because this orthodontics treatment is fixed, plaque and bacteria are more likely to build up. It's important for your child to practice excellent oral hygiene at home to prevent decay and gum disease while they wear their braces.
